jail or in the hospital. We'll have to fight Koch and the press and the movie industry and the cops to get it-but we will get our free speech! Word has to go out to the gay community: You are in danger. Which side are you on? If you sit on your asses in bars. you're not for us! If you keep silent now. you're not for us!"

I called Doug Ireland, a New York journalist who worked with Arthur Bell in alerting gays about "Cruising. The film crew has left the Village, he says, and a nationwide boycott is now planned.

Weintraub, the film's producer. says three changes have been made in the film: 1) It opens with a short disclaimer, something to the effect that the film doesn't represent all gays: 2) The crazy sex-killer and the crazy cop are now "sexually ambiguous." rather than gay: 3) The film will include a "good. healthy gay relationship." (So the message of "Cruising" is now this: good, healthy gays are the real freaks, and "Cruising" does not represent them except as such.)

Though Weintraub denies it..Ireland says. "These concessions were wrung from Friedkin and Weintraub by outraged gays. And the protests certainly restricted their filming and cost them money."

Ireland mentions Steve Askinazy, a gay activist who was often present at meetings between the gay community and the Sixth Precinct. During the protests on August 20. Askinazy was fleeing with the crowd from a police charge. He. was grabbed by a cop and beaten. More cops gathered to join in, and after being clubbed and punched in the head and stomach, he was thrown into a paddy wagon.

It is suspected that Askinazy was especially selected by homophobic cops who were familiar with him from Sixth Precinct meetings. Ireland describes Askinazy as "a very non-violent man." Steve was a member of the Marshals. While being beaten he continually declared. "I surrender! I surrender!" Askinazy is now in a hospital, suffering (Continued on page 30)
